Health and First Aid

Our staff is first aid and CPR certified. In addition, we have a registered nurse and a doctor on call 24 hours a day. The local medical center/hospital is located within five miles of our campus.

Students Traveling Alone

There is nothing more important to us than the safety of your children and this is reflected in every aspect of our program. We know many of our students are traveling alone. We will have an Athenian representative waiting at the airport to meet and escort your child safely to The School. The representatives will have a picture of your child to assist in easy identification. We will provide each student with a cell phone number of the person who will be greeting him or her at the airport. When your child arrives at The School, we encourage students to contact their parents via email or telephone to confirm their safe arrival.

Insurance, Liability Waivers, Medical Disclosures

The Athenian School does not provide SELP students any form of insurance against accident, injury, illness, or death. Parents must ensure that their son or daughter is fully covered for any medical expenses which may be incurred during their stay in the United States. Parents are responsible for all medical costs incurred during the five weeks of this program regardless of cause. Neither The Athenian School nor its officers, directors, or staff, can safeguard against accidents or injuries which may occur for whatever reason while on campus or on a field trip. Participants will not be permitted in the program unless evidence of medical coverage has been received prior to the start date of the program.

Passports/Visa

All international students require a valid passport for our SELP program. Do not leave your passport and visa at home.

Orientation/Check-in

Check in will begin at 2:00 pm and continue until 4:00 pm on July 6, 2008. Parents are welcome, but need not attend. Staff will be confirming all paperwork has been received and that all fees are paid. In addition, we will provide each student with a personal envelope to store passports, visa’s, large sums of money, airline tickets, etc. These items will be locked in our safe. Students will have access to them by appointment. Students will be escorted to the dorms after confirmation that all documents and medical information is complete. Students will receive a tour of the campus. Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm.

Important!

A Tuberculosis test is required for international students attending the SELP program. A nurse will be on hand to confirm that all medical information is complete. It is very important that you indicate the date of your child’s last tuberculosis (TB) test and shot. If you do not have that information, it is recommended that a chest x-ray be brought with the student. If neither is available, your child must have a TB test at The School. If the test result is positive, the student must visit our doctor for a chest x-ray. You will be responsible for the additional costs.

The Two Most Often Asked Questions

My child has never had a Tuberculosis Vaccination. Is it required?

YES This will be the first time my child has traveled out of the country.

What if he or she gets homesick?

How does your staff handle students’ homesickness? Leaving the comfort of your family and home can be difficult. Young students leaving the familiarity of their country and language can be overwhelming, even for adults. WE UNDERSTAND! Our staff is not unfamiliar with students who are apprehensive. Our dorm staffs, teachers and program director, are compassionate and will make this a positive and memorable experience. Typically, students who constantly call home only prolong the feelings of homesickness. We encourage parents not to continually call the first week while students are settling into a new routine. We strongly believe children will adjust when they can resolve issues on their own and without continual parent intervention. Please trust that we have many years experience and the best interest of your child in mind.
